Beadwork

Cree or Blackfoot style pipe bag

Smoking tobacco was an important part of early-day Blackfeet society. All major decisions were sealed with a smoke or a gift of tobacco. Tobacco contained certain medicinal properties known by the Indians. The Blackfeet developed a method of growing, their own tobacco which developed into an elaborate tobacco-planting ceremony involving its use for the major bundles and ceremonials. (Bob Scriver, THE BLACKFEET, Artists of the Northern Plains. The Scriver Collection of Blackfeet Indian Artifacts and Related Objects, 1894-1990).
